New Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council Cllr Sarah Reilly

Cllr Sarah Reilly elected as Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council

Cllr Sarah Reilly has been elected as Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council for the forthcoming year, succeeding Cllr Wayne Harding said it was “essential we listen to the concerns of our constituents”.

Kells Cllr Reilly (FG) said it was an honour to be elected and that she aims to emulate Cllr Harding's “fairness and professionalism” during her year ahead as Cathaoirleach.

“I often think about how lucky I am to serve with you all. I do worry about the future of politics and the rise of misogyny within politics but within this chamber, there is respect. The respect demonstrated within this chamber should not be taken for granted. As for the future of Meath, projects such as the new rail line will make Meath a more attractive place for investment and these developments are crucial.”

“It is essential we listen to the concerns of our constituents. There will be objections and obstacles, but if we want to build a Meath that is stronger, we need to persist. If we want young people to live and work in Meath, we must not only invest in the transport industry, but educational skills, too.

“I plan to use my voice to advocate for Dunboyne College of Further Education.

Facilities such as the new Women’s Refuge are important. I fully intend to turn sod on this before my year in the chair is over. Thank you for the trust you have placed in me by electing me cathaoirleach.”

Cllr Sarah Reilly received 28 votes from her fellow councillors during a roll call election, with four members being absent and eight members voting for other candidate Ratoath Cllr Fionnan Blake (SF).

In congratulating Cathaoirleach Sarah Reilly, Navan Cllr Yemi Adenuga said: “Everyone who knows you knows you don't do things by half measures. You always deliver. That ability to connect with people is what makes you an effective public representative. No matter how busy you are, you never lose your warmth.”

Bettystown Cllr Sharon Tolan said: “You are not one of, but the hardest working Cllr I know. You are the fairest person I know and you are a champion of public service. I'm delighted that you'll be representing our county.”

Ashbourne Cllr Alan Tobin (FG) was elected as Leas Cathaoirleach taking over the role Cllr Caroline O’Reilly (FF).

Upon the election of Cllr Tobin, Cllr O’Reilly said: “As my year comes to an end, I want to thank everyone who made it such a rewarding experience.

“I want to thank Cllr Wayne Harding. It is a very difficult job with a lot of work behind the scenes. I was proud to support you. I attended a lot of events across Meath and saw the work being done by people across the County.

“It's been a real honour to be in the role of Leas Cathaoirleach.

“Congratulations to Cllr Sarah Reilly and Cllr Tobin and best of luck.”
