Work under way at Claremont Stadium track

Officials of Claremont Stadium Club had plenty of reasons to celebrate this morning when work commenced on the refurbishment and upgrading of the eight-lane, 400-metre track at the Navan sports centre.

Fundraising for the project was boosted at the weekend when Navan AC's Keith Russell completed a 24-hour marathon run at the track as part of the efforts to raise a final €50,000 for the €265,000 development.

The focus is very much on the international standard eight-lane 400-metre Olympic running track that will be completely upgraded and refurbished some 20 years after it was officially opened in October 2000.

Claremont Stadium is a multi-purpose indoor and outdoor sports complex jointly operated by Navan Athletic Club and Parkvilla FC as Claremont Stadium Club.

Funding of €180, 000 was secured this year for the project under the Sports Capital Programme.

With support also from Meath Local Sports Partnership, the project is on target for completion this month.

“The track at Claremont Stadium has been the stage of many county, regional and schools' championships for the past 20 years and provides the community of Navan and the surrounding area with an ideal training venue in a safe and healthy environment,” stated Claremont Stadium manager Marjan Boers.

Members of the public may still support the project and sponsor a metre of track for €10 (400 metres x eight lanes) and progress can be followed on the Facebook page.
