School principal, Violet Molloy, shows the poor condition of the existing building

Go ahead for new Lismullen School Building

The long awaited new building for Lismullen National School moved a step closer to reality this evening with the announcement that the awarding of a tender is imminent.

Minister Thomas Byrne has confirmed that the Department of Education has issued a letter of intent to the school in relation to the awarding of a tender for the project.

The large scale capital project, involves the construction of a new 16 classroom school, a GP Hall and classrooms for children with special educational needs.

Staff and parents have been campaigning for years for the new premises, pointing out the current building is not fit for purpose.

Children and staff endure cold, cramped conditions every day and regularly have to wear coats, hats and scarves indoors.

The school has no indoor facilities for PE, concerts or assembly and just one toilet for 25 members of staff.

“As a local TD who has worked tirelessly, both in government and opposition for the delivery of this project over many years, today is extra special," Minister Byrne said.

“The issue of the letter of intent is a significant milestone in the progression of this project. The next major milestone will be the issue of the Letter of Acceptance to the successful contractor. This will be done following further engagement with the successful contractor in relation to their tenders for the design and construction of the new school for Lismullen.

“I want to pay tribute to the local school community, the students, parents, staff and the principal for their perseverance in getting this project across the line."

Meath County Council Cathaoirleach, Cllr Tommy Reilly welcomed the news.

“I am absolutely over the moon for everyone concerned and connected with Lismullen National School. When myself and the Minister visited recently, the frustration felt by Principal Violet Molloy was absolutely palpable.

"I left that day and vowed to get answers and action and this evening's news is just fantastic,” said Cllr Reilly.
