Walterstown blaze destroys up to 1,000 bales

Navan fire crews attended a major fire last night in Walterstown where it is estimated that up to 1,000 straw bales were destroyed at the Reynolds farm due to a blaze that broke out from sometime around 7pm or so.

The straw bales were stacked in the open and were, it is reported, of top quality due to the good summer conditions.

When the fire crews arrived there wasn't a lot that could be done to salvage the straw bales, but efforts were made to protect the surrounding hedgerows and crews dampened the area accordingly while the fire raged.

Crews remained in place as a safety measure until it was deemed safe to leave and at its height the blaze and billowing smoke were visible for some distance from the scene of the blaze.
