Dunshaughlin mourns student killed in Moldova crash

A Meath community has been left 'shocked and shattered' after learning of the death of a young Junior Certificate student in a road traffic accident in Moldova.

Marius Bors (15) was killed in a car crash while on holiday with his family last weekend.

Devastated Dunshaughlin Scouts are hosting a vigil to remember their young Venture tonight (Wednesday) in the village.

It's understood that Marius and his father Sergio, who is originally from Moldova, were travelling to a function when the car was hit side-on.

Heartbreakingly, it's believed his mum, baby sister and brother were following in a second car and witnessed the accident.

The family had moved to Ashbourne in recent months but Marius was still hugely involved in groups in Dunshaughlin

A student of Dunshaughlin Community College, Marius was due to pick up his Junior Certificate Results in the coming few weeks.

His death has left Dunshaughlin and especially the 7th Meath Scouts Group, of which he was a member 'devastated.'

"He was in the Cubs and Scouts here and had recently moved into the Ventures," said Scout leader Pat Rathborne.

"He was a very quiet child who came out of himself during a two week camp to Scotland in July and endeared everyone he met.

"Anyone who joins the Scouts learns quickly that it becomes and extended family and so this has caused ripples right across the Scout groups throughout Ireland and Scotland.

"Everyone is just shocked and shattered and our thoughts are hugely with Marius' family and friends at this time.

"We had arranged this vigil as a close affair but it snowballed as more groups wanted to participate - he was that well thought of"

Local Fine Gael Cllr Gerry O'Connor said the teenager's death was "a huge blow to the community."

"I knew him when he was just a young boy in the Cubs and he took part in the football academy that I run at the local Community Centre.  He also took part in Teen Fit classes here.

"He played a very active part in the community and so his death has left us all reeling."

On its Facebook Page, the 7th Meath Scouts said: "It is with profound sadness that we learned that one of our Venture Scouts Marius Bors was tragically killed in a car crash in Moldova while on holidays with his family.

"Marius has been a valued member of our group for a number of years and contributed hugely to everything he undertook.

"He was a kind and gentle scout and will be sadly missed by his fellow Scouts and Scouters"

"To honour his memory, we are gathering in Dunshaughlin Community College this Wednesday, August 29th from 7.30-9pm

"All are welcome and we would ask you to keep Marius and his family in your thoughts at this time."

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said they "cannot confirm on individual consular cases but can confirm that consular assistance is being provided to the family of an individual in Moldova."
