Hollie Clarke McDermott’s phenomenal performance inspired Nobber NS to victory over Kilmainhamwood NS in the Girls Div 4/5 Shield final at Trim on Thursday.
Kilmainhamwood were gutsy in defeat and despite conceding a flurry of goals which included a hat-trick from McDermott, the losing side battled to the final whistle. However, the talented Nobber side were full value for the victory.
Katelyn Smyth and Emily Byrne traded scores and after 10 minutes the sides were deadlocked with 1-1 a piece.
Nobber seized control and scored 1-3 on the spin, 1-2 of which came from the boot of McDermott who rattled the back of the net with a superb finish. Points at the end of the first-half for Byrne and Emily Rogers kept Kilmainhamwood in touch but they trailed at the break 1-3 to 2-4.
Goals after half-time for McDermott, Smyth and Aoife Condra put the eventual winners well clear of the opposition.
Byrne who finished with a brilliant tally of 2-5 kept plugging away at the scoreboard for Kilmainhamwood and she completed her brace in the 31st minute with a nice finish to the net.The impressive Nobber cruised to the finish line though and in the 35th minute McDermott set up Aine Cox Smyth for their sides’ sixth goal before the former completed her hat-trick a minute later.
Emily Rogers scored a consolation goal for the girls in blue and white late on but at that stage the game had gotten away from Kilmainhamwood NS.
The final whistle confirmed a first-ever girls Cumann na mBunscol title for Nobber NS.
