Gardai upgrade disappearance of missing Navan man to murder investigation
Gardai have upgraded the disappearance of Navan man Mark Duffy four years ago to a murder investigation.
Gardaí in Navan continue to investigate all of the circumstances of the disappearance of Mr Duffy, last seen on the 3rd October 2022 in the town.
In a statement, An Garda Síochána said it has maintained an open and active investigation into the disappearance of the 43 year old, carried out by a dedicated investigation team based at Navan Garda Station led by a Senior Investigating Officer.
"Based on the entirety of the information available to the investigation team at Navan Garda station, today Wednesday 30th September 2026 An Garda Síochána can confirm that this missing person investigation has now been reclassified as a murder investigation.
"A family liaison officer remains in place for Mark's family. The FLO and members of the Garda investigation team have updated Mark's family this morning."
In the weeks before his disappearance Mark had been living homeless in a tent in Navan town.
On the 3rd of October 2022 Mark was seen at the Post Office at Johnstown Shopping Centre, Navan at 10:50am.
Later on that day at approximately 14:45pm Mark was seen on CCTV on the Commons Road, Navan, walking into McDermotts Villas Housing Estate which is the last confirmed sighting of Mark.
Mark was subsequently reported missing on October 13th 2022 by a family member who became concerned when she hadn’t heard from him.
A Garda missing persons investigation commenced and it was established that there had been no sightings of Mark since October 3rd 2022, nor had his phone been used and he had not left the country.
Gardaí subsequently conducted searches of the Navan and River Boyne areas but there have been no sightings of Mark or evidence of his whereabouts.
A Garda spokesperson said:
"Mark is described as 5’ 8” in height and of broad build with brown hair and blue eyes. Mark walked with a noticeable limp at the time. Mark was wearing dark clothing with a cream hoody underneath, the hood of which was outside his jacket when last seen.
"An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to any person with any information on the disappearance and murder of Mark Duffy to please contact the Garda investigation team.
"Did you see or speak to Mark on October 3rd 2022 or in the days leading up to it?
"Mark was last seen on CCTV at the Commons Road, Navan at approximately 2:45pm on the 3rd October 2022. Were you in the area around this time? Do you know where he went after here?
"If you think you may have seen Mark or that you may be able to assist the investigation, Gardaí would appreciate your assistance.
"No matter how insignificant you think any information may be, do not assume that it’s not of interest or value to An Garda Síochána or that An Garda Síochána may already have the information."
