Meath libraries host free events for open day

Meath libraries will host a range of free family-friendly events on 26th Saturday, September as part of National Public Libraries Open Day 2026.

The nationwide event will see public libraries across the country showcase their services, programmes and resources, with people of all ages encouraged to visit their local branch.

Every library in the county will also hold a STEAM Saturday session, offering children and adults the opportunity to explore, create, play and learn together.

Library staff will be available throughout the day to introduce visitors to the range of free clubs, events, services and activities available to library members throughout the year.

National Public Libraries Open Day is intended to highlight the changing role of libraries, which continue to provide extensive book collections while also offering a wide range of digital, educational, cultural and community resources.

Library members can access eBooks, audiobooks, online newspapers and magazines, as well as learning resources, family programmes, cultural events and community activities.

Libraries also provide welcoming spaces where people can read, study, work, access information and connect with others.

There are currently 330 public libraries across Ireland, with the network delivered through local authorities.

Maedhbh Rogan-McGann, County Librarian with Meath County Council Library Service, encouraged people to visit their local branch on 26th September.

“Our libraries are welcoming spaces at the heart of their communities, offering something for everyone,” she said.

“We invite people of all ages to visit their local branch on National Public Libraries Open Day and discover all that Meath Libraries have to offer.”

Head of Libraries Development at the Local Government Management Agency, Dr Stuart Hamilton, said public libraries were among the many services delivered by local authorities every day.

“National Public Libraries Open Day is a celebration of that contribution and an opportunity to showcase the breadth of services available through Ireland’s public library network,” he said.
