IWA offering vital supports to Meath members as it appeals for support ahead of Annual Fundraising Day

Irish Wheelchair Association's (IWA) Annual Fundraising Day is taking place across Ireland next Thursday, September 24th, including Navan.

Members, staff and volunteers will be hitting the streets collecting vital funds for the supports and activities IWA provides in Meath and across the country.

IWA has a strong presence in Navan, with two centres, providing a range of education, social, recreation and personal development opportunities for people with disabilities.

Michael Kelledy from Slane and Agnes Sherriff from Kells are wheelchair users and have been members of IWA for over twelve years. They say they feel the benefits of the support from the local community in Navan.

For many people the IWA centre is their only chance to get out and meet friends. "I love the craic here, meeting the ladies and gentlemen," said Michael. Michael was in hospital for two years when he started coming to IWA and has really appreciated the support. "We have a great time”, he said.

"I look forward to coming to IWA every week," said Agnes. "I love meeting everyone and I love our day trips". Agnes also loves the regular board games and card games they play together, although she jokes "they do get a bit competitive."

Kelly Kinsella is a more recent member, having joined the centre five years ago and has fit right in, "I love the family atmosphere here.” she said.

IWA hopes to raise €40,000 to support the organisation’s work locally and across the country. Last year the organisation provided 87,080 days of community services through its 48 community centres and 17 outreach centres nationwide.

The organisation also delivered assisted living services in homes across the country and supported 19 IWA Sports Clubs, including Royal Rockets, while its 142 accessible buses supported with IWA-transport services.

IWA’s work nationwide is dedicated to supporting people with disabilities in communities to live a life of choice and independence. The organisation relies on donations to develop, grow and continue to support its members who want to be active, social, independent and advocate for their rights.

IWA Navan will be fundraising outside Aldi and various locations around the town, with support from St. Joseph's Mercy Secondary School and St.Patrick's Classical School in Navan
