Drumree’s ‘Mullet Man’ cuts off his famous locks for charity

Nine-year-old Tom Mc Weeney from Drumree has said goodbye to his much-loved mullet after growing his hair for over two years to raise money for two very special causes.

Tom, who attends Gaelscoil na Ríthe, decided to part with his distinctive hairstyle and donate his hair to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real-hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other medical conditions.

As well as donating his hair, Tom has raised over €1,200 for LauraLynn, Ireland’s Children’s Hospice, through his fundraising efforts even donating some of his much coveted Communion money!!

Tom loved his long hair and was proud of his famous mullet, wearing it with pride for his communion. He was inspired to make the big chop by his older sister, Katie McWeeney.

Katie has previously donated her own hair to the Little Princess Trust twice, while raising more than €2,000 for LauraLynn.

Following in his sister’s footsteps, Tom decided that his hair could be put to good use while also helping raise vital funds for children and families supported by LauraLynn.

The Drumree youngster has received tremendous support from his family, friends, teammates and school friends throughout his fundraising campaign.

Tom would like to extend a special thank you to everyone in Dunshaughlin GAA Club, Drumree Hurling Club, Rockets Basketball Club, Lisa Jane Caden Dance Academy and Gaelscoil na Ríthe, his family and friends for their encouragement and generosity.

For Tom, losing his beloved mullet was a big decision, but knowing that his hair will help another child and that his fundraising will support LauraLynn made it all worthwhile.

What began as a much-loved hairstyle has ultimately become a wonderful example of kindness, generosity and community spirit — with Tom following his sister Katie’s lead and making a big difference at just nine years of age. He tells us he is already growing it again!
