World champion Foley links up with Ireland star to launch Purple Run

Irish rugby international Joe McCarthy has officially joined forces with his brother Andrew and members of Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) including Trim AC's record breaking world champion Liam Foley to launch the 2026 Purple Run, calling on the nation to lace up their runners this autumn for a powerful cause.

Taking place throughout October, during Down Syndrome Awareness Month, the Purple Run is a flexible, month-long virtual fitness challenge.

Members of the public are invited to walk, jog, or run a total marathon distance of 42km (26.2 miles) across the 31 days of October at their own pace.

Liam is well placed to encourages supports to sign up, as a record breaking runnner.

“I was selected in 2023 to represent Ireland in the Down syndrome Athletics European championships in Padua, Italy in 800m and 1500m track races. I have represented Ireland in two European championships and two world championships," said Foley, son of Meath GAA legend Kevin.

"I won two European gold medals in 2023 in 800m and 1500m and again in Prague, Czechia in 2025. I won two world gold medals in 800m and 1500m in Antalya, Turkey 2024 and again in Sophia, Bulgaria in 2026.

"So I've eight gold medals. I broke the Down syndrome world record in 800m and the European record in 1500m in Bulgaria June 2026."

Liam also works two jobs; one with the National Lottery, and he recently began a role in Trim Castle Hotel through Down Syndrome Ireland’s employment programme.

“I like having a job in my home town. I meet new people all the time and lots of locals that I know.”

Every euro raised through the initiative will directly fund DSI’s core services nationwide, assisting individuals with Down syndrome through every milestone, from early intervention to inclusive education, employment opportunities like Liam’s.

"I’m always proud to stand alongside Andrew and support Down Syndrome Ireland. The work they do to empower people with Down syndrome across the country is incredible. The Purple Run isn't about setting record pace, it's about community, inclusion, and getting active together," said Leinster and Ireland's Joe McCarthy.

His brother Andrew added: "I’m delighted to launch the Purple Run with Joe! Staying active and being part of a team is so important to me. Getting involved is a fantastic way for families, friends, and colleagues to get out in the fresh air and make a big difference for people with Down syndrome.”
