Man charged in connection with an alleged stabbing incident in Navan

A 32-year-old man with an English address who appeared in court today (Tues) charged in connection with an alleged stabbing incident in Navan yesterday has been remanded in custody.

Martin McDonagh of Stockingstone Road, in Luton was brought before Trim District Court in custody on a charge of an alleged offences under Section 3(1) and Section 3(2) of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997 – assault causing harm to an individual at Tailteann Drive, Navan on Monday.

A Garda gave evidence of having arrested the accused and charged him. The Garda said it would be alleged that the accused stabbed a man who had a wound to his side and had to be taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for treatment. The Garda added that he would be objecting to the accused being given bail.

Mr McDonagh, who had no legal representation in court because of the dispute between solicitors and the Minister for Justice said he was seeking bail. He said he was someone who had an address in the UK where he lived with his wife and children. He said he did not intend to run away. “Where would I run to?” he asked. He did not go to anybody else’s house. It was the case that people came to his house.

He told Judge Catherine Hayden that he would surrender his passport and any other condition in order to get bail.

"You can’t get on a ferry unless you show your passport”, he said. The judge said that while there was a presumption of innocence the charge was a very serious one and she refused bail. She remanded the accused in custody until 18th August next to await instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions
