Giving old clothes a new life... Meath woman's sustainability initiative returns this Sunday
A MEATH WOMAN and her friend have given old clothes a new purpose through their love of sustainable clothing.
Jessica Ryan from Beauparc, Co Meath and Orla O'Leary from Santry, Co Dublin, first thought of the idea to create a 'Swap Shop' while studying in Dublin City University during their final year.
Jessica, who attended St. Joseph's Mercy Secondary School in Navan, said: "We both were in the Sustainable Living Society and we were both really interested in sustainable and second-hand clothing.
We decided to set up our own collective called Swapportunity Eire, first hosting our Swap Shop events weekly in the university, where people could bring their unwanted clothes, swap items and take home items they liked."
Not only is it a great way to revamp your wardrobe, but it works to de-clutter your wardrobe, too.
All you need for a brand new wardrobe is your old, unloved clothing that you're willing to re-home, or just come along and take as little or as much as you want.
The success of Swapportunity Eire has been huge, with events being held internationally in Dublin, Barcelona and Lisbon.
Recent events have been held in aid of different charities, with a small entry fee and different stalls being added, such as flash tattooing and crafts, with proceeds being used to fundraise.
Their next event is being held this Sunday 24th August at 5pm to 10pm in The Grand Social in Dublin.
The event is being held in aid of Palestinian charity, Bureij Association, which provides services and supports to children with special/additional needs and to help feel families in Gaza.
Donating upon arrival is strongly urged and a small fee for entry to the event will also be used for donations.
The event will host an array of stalls including the usual Swap Shop clothing, a bar, music and other fun-filled activities, with all proceeds made being donated to the chosen charity.
Bring as many or as little items as you like, as you can still take part in the Swap Shop without contributing clothing.
After the event, all clothing left over will be used for the next event, donated to charity or to homeless support services.
