Comedian Enya Martin 'delighted' by 'lovely Trim audience' at her sold-out Púca Festival debut
Enya Martin made her first appearance at Púca Festival, selling out the Swift Cultural Centre in less time than it takes any of her online video sketches to go viral.
The Clondalkin-born comedian was thrilled with her reception from a capacity crowd in Trim on Thursday night and to be part of what she described as a "very special festival".
The 34-year-old Dubliner said she'd be delighted if she was asked back again next year by which time she'll be a fully fledged Co Meath resident - she's hoping to move into her new house in Ratoath before the year's out.
"It was my first time doing Trim and the Púca Festival as well, so I was honoured to be asked. I've seen other acts do it over the years, so I was honoured to be asked. I know they only pick a handful of comedians to do it. I was delighted that it sold out.
"The Trim audience was such a nice audience, they were so respectful, and when you're going somewhere for the first time, you don't know what the crowd will be like and stuff, but they were a really lovely audience, and I was flattered that, you know, they got it to sell out, and that really, really means a lot to me, so I'd love to go back, it's such a lovely festival to be associated with as well."
If she is to be back for the 2027 Puca Festival, she won't have far to travel either as her new house in the Royal county nears completion.
"It's a new build, in a new development, so I'm just waiting to get the snag done now. so that'll be exciting anyway, and get in before Christmas. I thought I would have wanted to stay closer to Clondalkin, but to be honest, I think it's going to be nice living out in Meath, and away from the bedlam of Dublin as well.
While the lead up to Christmas in her new home is exciting for Enya, 2027 looks to be just as full on.
"It just keeps getting bigger and better, and definitely it's been a massive transition this year. I was in my first play, 'The Kavanaghs - Married with Parents' that's going to be in the Olympia next may, written by Al Porter and Karl Spain, and that's been a great experience. and I really want to get into acting now as well, and then obviously the new tour and I also got a pilot TV show commissioned on RTE, so that's going to be filmed in early January, and be on the telly then hopefully for Paddy's week, which will be amazing."
With all that's going on, including keeping hundreds of thousands of online followers satisfied with sketches and madcap clips about friendships, relationships and life, Enya is also trying to stop and take in the view.
"Sometimes you get that sense of never being satisfied, and sometimes I have to kind of take a second to realise, you're standing in a place you once only dreamed of, like take a second to appreciate that, and stop beating yourself up about not being somewhere, or where someone else is at the moment, or you know, that kind of comparison syndrome. I do think like, the wait can be longer, because the blessing will be bigger, that's my belief."
Enya can't quite recall the lightbulb moment she decided she would turn her natural ability to make family and friends laugh into a career choice.
"When you're younger, and you're having the craic, and you're making family members laugh, you're making your friends laugh, you know, you never think for a second, oh, I'm going to be a stand-up comedian, that's exactly what I'm going to be.
"I still went to college, I did the typical, you know, route that society tells you to take, Leaving Cert, college, get a job, and in the corporate world. I did a few internships and stuff, but it wasn't until Facebook came along, and I started seeing other people posting videos, and like funny videos, and I thought, you know what, like no one's going to give me a spot on a TV show, or put me on the Late Late, because I'm a nobody at the moment.
"So what I'll do is, I'll use these videos on social media to kind of, I suppose, build my own door, so people will come knocking on it, and yeah, and back then I was very, very green, and you know, compared to where I am today, I've learned so much, I'm way more experienced, way more mature.
"But that's how it started, and that's how I am where I am today, because I just decided to make a few videos, and put myself out there to the world, you know, rather than just to my family and friends."
She certainly has a few more friends in Co Meath now.
