Chalk Talk: Jingle Bell run returns to Kinnegad Plaza for festive fundraiser

The popular Jingle Bell Run will return to the Kinnegad Plaza on Saturday, December 12th, with organisers hoping to build on last year’s successful inaugural event, which attracted 120 festively decorated tractors, trucks and cars.

The family-friendly fundraiser, held in aid of Killyon National School, will get underway at 3pm, with the illuminated convoy departing the Plaza at 5pm and travelling through Kinnegad, the Hill of Down and Killyon.

Organised in partnership with the Kinnegad Plaza, and supported by Longwood Transport, Armstrong Machinery, Morans of the Hill of Down and local businesses and community groups, the event promises to be colourful celebration of Christmas while raising vital funds for the rural primary school.

The Jingle Bell Run was the brainchild of local community stalwarts Geraldine Losty and Colm Raleigh, whose original tractor run idea developed into a major community event focused on family enjoyment and safety.

The organising committee includes representatives from the school’s Parents’ Association and Board of Management, Killyon Community Council, Killyon Hurling and Camogie Club and other local supporters.

Killyon National School Principal Nigel Boardman said the event has already made a significant difference to the school.

“As a small rural school, we strive to give our children the same opportunities and resources as larger schools while maintaining our close-knit, caring environment."

“Since last year’s Jingle Bell Run, we’ve been able to invest in an outdoor classroom, STEM equipment and a 3D printer. This year’s proceeds will help us further develop our sensory room and make it more accessible to all pupils.

“The support from the Kinnegad Plaza, Longwood transport, Armstrong Machinery, James Moran and the wider community has been fantastic, and we’re looking forward to another great family occasion.”

Pat McDonagh, Managing Director of Supermac’s and the Plaza Group, welcomed the return of the event.

“Supporting local schools and communities is very important to us. Last year’s turnout was fantastic, and we’re delighted to partner with Killyon National School again. It’s a wonderful way to bring families together at Christmas while supporting a very worthwhile cause.”

This year’s best-decorated vehicle will win a weekend away at one of the luxurious Só Hotels, with participants encouraged to go all out with their festive displays.

A fundraising raffle will also feature a €1,200 holiday voucher, hotel breaks, model tractors and children’s toys, generously donated by sponsors.

The raffle will take place at Moran’s of the Hill of Down following the run, with spot prizes throughout the evening.

Organisers are encouraging tractor, truck and car owners to take part, while families and spectators are invited to enjoy the festivities at the Kinnegad Plaza from 3pm and cheer on the convoy as it sets off at 5pm.
