Rathkenny Hall at 75: 'We want to make sure our Community Centre is here for many more generations to enjoy'
EDEL CALIFF, CHAIRPERSON
As Rathkenny Hall celebrates 75 years, its future is in the hands of a new generation determined to build on the work of those who came before them. Among them is current chairperson Edel Devin Califf, daughter of the late Marian Devin, whose dedication to the hall was part of its story for many years. Now Edel and a revitalised committee are ensuring that the hall remains at the heart of community life for generations to come.
“Rathkenny Community Centre is a fantastic asset to our community.
“Over its many years, it has been a hive of activity that has encouraged cross-generational friendships and working partnerships.
“Unfortunately, like many rural centres, ours fell victim to changing times, different types of events, online advertising and a lack of funds. Add to that our closure due to Covid, which meant the Community Centre had no income while the overheads were still there.
“It fell into financial difficulty, paired with a tired, small committee who were struggling after putting years of time and effort into the Community Centre.
“With one last attempt, a community SOS was delivered in the form of a letter to every house in the parish.
“Approximately 30 people arrived at a meeting in August 2022 – and so our new chapter began.
“With so many people from all demographics of the community willing to help, we decided that, as caretakers of the Community Centre, we needed to future-proof it for the next generations.
“We want them to experience that same sense of belonging to a community family, to have a safe space to enjoy, meet people, bring their children, join a class and be part of their community.
“Since then, new ideas have flourished. The Community Centre is again home to seasonal farmers’ markets and fairs and hosts classes in dance, floral arranging and fitness. There are stage performances, kids’ discos, car boot sales, charity events, an Active Retirement group and funeral gatherings.
“Our seasonal markets have proved very successful, as Rathkenny and its surrounding area are oozing with creative and industrious people. These markets are an ideal family day out while also supporting local businesses and craftspeople.
“Our plans for Rathkenny Community Centre will modernise the facilities while keeping the character of the building and giving it a welcoming, homely feel.
“The improvements will ensure a safe working environment for all our volunteers and groups. They will also improve the environmental efficiency of the hall, with better standards of insulation, heating and lighting.
“After 75 years at the heart of Rathkenny, we want to make sure our Community Centre is here for many more generations to enjoy.”
