Community spirit shines at dip for Jigsaw in Laytown
There was something special about Laytown beach on Saturday 12th September as swimmers, supporters, families, clubs and community partners came together for Jigsaw Meath’s Dip for Jigsaw fundraiser.
With the sun shining on a balmy Saturday morning, around 70 swimmers took to the water, supported by approximately 50 people cheering them on from the shoreline. While the purpose of the event was to raise vital funds for the Charity. The morning quickly became about something much bigger - connection, community and the importance of coming together.
The event brought people from near and far to Laytown, with a wonderful sense of camaraderie evident from the moment people arrived.
The morning began with a pre-dip yoga session led by Lucy from Grow with the Flow and Jigsaw staff member, followed by a warm-up with Anthony and Sinéad from Savage Martial Arts Studio, ensuring everyone was feeling prepared and energised before taking the plunge.
A very special acknowledgement goes to Kells Swimming Club, who are celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year, turning out in large numbers to support the fundraiser. Their presence added enormously to the atmosphere and was a wonderful example of how sporting clubs can extend their community spirit beyond the pool.
There was also fantastic support from the Apple Green team in Julianstown. Sean and members of the team got on board with the fundraiser, bringing with them a phenomenal team spirit that was clear for all to see throughout the morning. Jigsaw Meath would like to sincerely thank you for your support.
We were also delighted to welcome the Simonstown Gaels U16 boys team, along with their parents and coaches. Watching the camaraderie among the young players and their families was a real credit to the club.
Jigsaw Meath’s ongoing work with clubs speaks to the values and goals that organisations such as Simonstown Gael GAA, share, supporting the whole person. The relationships, confidence and life skills developed through sport and community involvement can stay with young people long after their playing days have ended.
Sustainability was also part of the morning, with Jigsaw Meath delighted to avail of the Trim Family Resource Centre’s sustainability initiative, borrowing reusable coffee cups for the event and returning them afterwards. It was a simple but meaningful way of reducing waste while bringing community organisations together.
After the dip, participants and supporters were able to warm up with a discounted coffee, tea and treats from Ariosa Café, located just across the road. Their support added another lovely touch to the morning.
Jigsaw Meath would also like to extend a huge thank you to Swim Ireland and Meath Local Sports Partnership for their guidance and support in coordinating lifeguard cover and assisting with the many practical elements required to make the event happen safely and successfully.
A special thank you must also go to Jigsaw Meath’s Youth Advocates, whose support in the lead-up to the event was invaluable. And, of course, to every one of the 70 swimmers who took the plunge and the 50 supporters who lined the shoreline to cheer them on thank you. The atmosphere really was alive and kicking.
Speaking on the morning, Brenda Bradley from Jigsaw Meath explained that while Dip for Jigsaw is a fundraiser, its purpose is matched in abundance by the wider mission behind the event.
It is a reminder of the importance of connection, connecting with a friend, getting involved in your community, returning to a sport or hobby you enjoy, joining a club, or simply finding something that gives you a sense of belonging.
Community can be one of the greatest protective factors in supporting our mental health and well-being. Events such as Dip for Jigsaw provide a wonderful opportunity to put that message into action: people coming together, supporting one another, trying something new and sharing an experience.
The sunshine may have helped, but it was the people who truly made the morning shine.
Jigsaw Meath would like to sincerely thank every swimmer, supporter, volunteer, youth advocate, club, coach, family, business and community partner's who helped make Dip for Jigsaw at Laytown such a memorable success.
