Camogie championships starting to take shape

It was a week for the away teams in round two of the Senior A Camogie championship as Kilmessan picked up an eight-point win over Ratoath, while Killyon dominated against Kiltale. After a win against Killyon in their opening game at Senior A level, Blackhall Gaels suffered a heavy 4-21 to 0-5 loss at home to Na Fianna last Tuesday, writes Anna Gardiner.

Defending champions Na Fianna are the only side to have won both games after two rounds. All other sides now have one win, with the exception of Kiltale who have had two losses.

In contrast to the Senior A games, round two of the Senior B competition favoured the home sides. Navan O’Mahonys and Trim both racked up 5-14 to defeat their opponents (Kildalkey and St Peter’s Dunboyne respectively) in impressive fashion. Boardsmill claimed their second win beating Clann na nGael by 11.

The Intermediate action saw Dunderry claim a victory over last year’s runners-up Drumree in what was a nail-biting encounter. After a bye in round one, Donaghmore/Ashbourne began their championship with a substantial loss to Na Fianna’s second team.

In Junior A, a puck of the ball was all that separated Trim and Dunderry (final score 0-10 to 2-3) and Drumree and Kilmessan (2-3 to 1-3). The third game at this grade saw Na Fianna beat Ratoath by three.

Round two of the Junior B championship saw very one-sided results as Navan O’Mahonys, Boardsmill and Wolfe Tones registered three comprehensive victories. This week’s fixtures mark the last of the Junior B group games and semi-final spots will be on the line on Wednesday night.

The game between Donaghmore/Ashbourne and Kildalkey will determine who makes it out of Group B with Boardsmill, while it remains to be seen which two teams will progress from Group A.

Round three of the Senior A, Senior B and Intermediate competitions were played on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th September. Reports of round three games will be in next week’s paper. All clubs are urged to send in results and write-ups of matches to sports@meathchronicle.ie.
