Death of Gretta Fitzsimons of Navan publican family
The death occurred this morning (Saturday) of Gretta Fitzsimons, matriarch of the well-known Navan publican and political family, and wife of the late public representative, Paddy Fitzsimons.
Gretta Murray from Galway married Paddy Fitzsimons in 1960, and they bought a pub on Trimgate Street in the town.
Paddy, like his father, Senator Pat Fitzsimons, and brother, Jim, TD and MEP, served as a Fianna Fáil county and urban councillor, and was chair of the town council on five occasions, and as county council chairman. Gretta is mother to Padraig, Dara, Arlene and Jarlath and grandmother to eleven. Padraig, is currently a member of Meath County Council and was Mayor of Navan last year.
An accomplished artist, Gretta was also an active member of Royal Tara Golf Club in the past.
This morning, Paddy Fitzsimons public house posted: "As a mark of respect to our dear mother, Gretta Fitzsimons, who passed away peacefully this morning, our premises will be closed to the public from 6pm today, Saturday 22nd, until further notice. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers."
