Meath rivers under threat: Pollution and climate change just some of the challenges facing our waterways

Climate change, pollution, and overgrowth are just some of the elements harming our freshwater bodies, experts have warned. However, recent fish kills in the county that saw over 1,400 fish perish was a true alarm bell for action.

From damaged ecosystems to below-par water quality, issues that are flowing through the likes of the River Boyne and River Blackwater are worsening around the county. Although instances like the fish kill may lead to reactionary measures, Dr Puneeta Sreenvis of Sustainable Water Network, has said Meath rivers need more consistency.

Local anglers are also calling for more action from the State, as they feel the tools are there for improvement, but they are frustratingly being unused.
