Donegal GAA legend James McHugh and wife Noreen have died following N3 collision

All-Ireland winning Donegal footballer James McHugh has been named as the man who died following a two-vehicle collision on the N3 between Virginia and Cavan yesterday (Monday).

His wife Noreen who was the sole passenger in the car was seriously injured and was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital for treatment. She died in hospital this evening.

The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The 62-year-old Kilcar native was driving a car which collided with a van at Drummallaght, near New Inns, shortly before 2pm.

Mr McHugh was a member of Donegal's historic 1992 All-Ireland winning team and was awarded an All Star following that landmark season. He also enjoyed considerable success with his club, Kilcar, and represented Donegal at senior level between 1990 and 1996.

He was the brother of former Cavan manager and fellow 1992 All-Ireland winner Martin McHugh.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who travelled on the N3 between Virginia and Cavan between 1pm and 2pm on Monday.
