Gardaí seize 38 e-scooters during 'high impact day of action'

Gardaí conducted a ‘high impact day of action’ in the Dublin Metropolitan region on Tuesday, August 4th, under Operation Meacán.

The operation across the region which includes Meath was targeting a number of issues, which included unlawful use of e-scooters and e-bikes, and criminal activity including drug distribution, money laundering, transporting firearms, Drug Related Intimidation, and other serious offences.

Throughout the day, 63 searches resulted in the seizing of 38 e-scooters and e-bikes. Gardaí were also engaging with members of the public in the Dublin Region regarding current regulations in relation to motorcycles, e-bikes, e-scooters and the new regulations due to come into effect this month.

From the end of August, under-18s will no longer be permitted to operate the e-scooters. Riders will also be required to wear helmets and highly-visible clothing in the new regulations.

Other seizures include three scrambler motorcycles, and a singular quad vehicle.

Non-vehicle related seizures from the day included €8,000 in cash, and approximately €83,000 worth of suspected drugs, pending analysis.

The high impact day of action also resulted in the seizure of a sawn-off shotgun, along with ammunition.

Gardaí have arrested a man in his 20s during the day also, who is currently being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at a Garda station in the Dublin area.
