Motorist caught driving at 172km/h as Garda August bank holiday operation continues
A driver has been caught hitting a speed of 172km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M1 this weekend. The detection happened at Greenfields, Swords, Co. Dublin yesterday (Friday 31st July).
Garda Roads Policing Operation is taking place throughout the August bank holiday weekend from Thursday 30th July until Tuesday 4th August 2026.
"During the first two days of the operation, there was no fatality as a result of traffic collisions on our roads. The total number of fatalities on Irish roads to date this year is 108," Gardai said in statement.
"Throughout this weekend's Roads Policing Operation, Gardaí are conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.
"To date, a total of 39 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol and drugs).
"Just over 1,590 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the first two days of the operation."
Notable speeds detected yesterday, Friday 31st July 2026, include:
• 172km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M1 Greenfields, Swords, Co. Dublin.
• 115km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Clontarf Road, Dublin 3, Co. Dublin.
• 126km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Waterford Road, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.
• 127km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R428 Kylebeg, Stradbally, Co. Laois.
• 142km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N24 Belline & Rogerstown, Piltown, Co. Kilkenny.
"During the first two days, 200 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
"This weekend's road safety enforcement operation focuses on the four lifesaver offences in an effort to ensure that all road users get home safe.
