Discover The Royal County's forest gems this summer as Coillte launches "Start at Your Local Coillte Forest”

Girley Bog, Summerhill and Littlewood are among Coillte’s top Meath forest destinations this summer.

Each visitor destination offers its own distinct character. Across Meath, Coillte forests offer a range of experiences, from unique natural habitats and heritage features to woodland walks and family-friendly recreation.

At Girley Bog, visitors can explore a distinctive raised bog landscape along an eco-trail that highlights one of Ireland’s increasingly rare and important natural habitats and view the nature restoration works that have taken place here.

Summerhill combines waymarked woodland trails with picnic areas and a historic lime kiln, offering opportunities to enjoy both nature and local heritage.

Meanwhile, Littlewood provides a peaceful woodland setting rich in biodiversity, where a looped trail winds through a mix of native and broadleaf trees, making it a popular destination for walkers looking to explore the forest.

Coillte forests welcome an estimated 20 million visits annually, as more people enjoy the benefits of outdoor recreation and connecting with nature.

Over 260 Coillte recreation sites and 3,000km of walking trails available across Ireland.

As families plan summer day trips and staycations, Coillte is encouraging people across Meath to rediscover the forests on their doorstep through its “Start at Your Local Coillte Forest” campaign, highlighting local destinations that offer scenic walks, family adventures and opportunities to reconnect with nature.

Speaking about the importance of Coillte’s recreational offering, Coillte CEO Imelda Hurley, said: “Every summer, thousands of people choose Coillte forests to walk, explore and spend quality time together. We want to remind people that you don't need to travel far to enjoy memorable outdoor experiences – some of Ireland's most beautiful places are right on your doorstep.

“As part of our commitment to delivering the multiple benefits of forests for climate, nature, wood and people, we’re continuing to enhance our outdoor recreation offering. Our ambition is to expand our recreation areas to 500 sites nationwide and enable investment to develop world-class visitor destinations that strengthen rural communities and create even more opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors.”
