Request for benches on Navan’s Beaufort Road

Meath County Council is to look at the possibility of providing seating on Beaufort Road in Navan, which links the Round O roundabout on Flowerhill and the Senator Patrick Fitzsimons Bridge, and leads onto Navan town and shopping centre after crossing the Kells Road close to Navan Fire Station.

At a meeting of the council last week, Cllr Francis Deane proposed the council erect a few rest benches, along the route.

"A lot of people walk that road into town and back to do their shopping. People also use it to take their daily exercise or walk and may need to take a rest on the way, especially when going uphill.

"Before Christmas a number of people suggested it to me. We could provide one on each side, " he suggested. He was told the council would be happy to look at the possibility but an assessment on the suitability and location for benches would have to be taken in conjunction with the requirement for lighting, bins etc, which need to be considered.

The council would also have to take into consideration concerns and privacy issues outside private residences.

"As this is a National Road we will need to consult with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, as the authority in charge of the road, with regard to the possibility of assigning extra street furniture on this section of road,” the council engineer stated in response to Cllr Deane, who lives close by at Blackwater Drive.
