EirGrid pledge to begin pylon construction ‘without any further delay’

Meath councillors can expect to be told that construction will start on the controversial North South Interconnector next year, when they meet with EirGrid officials in the next two weeks.

EirGrid’s Chief Infrastructure Officer, Michael Mahon has already warned: “This project is a piece of critical infrastructure and EirGrid and the ESB will be using all mechanisms at our disposal to ensure delivery.”

Mark Foley, EirGrid CEO, said: “Given the importance of this project, it is essential that we progress it now without any further delay.”

EirGrid is expected to make a presentation on the project to Meath Co Council within the next two weeks.

At a presentation to both Cavan and Monaghan councils last week, Mr Mahon said: “We will fully engage with landowners, local communities and stakeholders along the route as we proceed with the project.

“All landowners who host the infrastructure will be compensated."

Mr Foley insisted constructing the system above ground is “the only way to do it”.

Spokesperson for the North East Pylon Pressure Campaign, Padraig O'Reilly said: "There was zero weighting given to landowners concerns or rights for the last 16 years.

“The talk now of compensation shows how out of touch the company is with the reality on the ground.”
