Hunt secures All-Ireland Schools title
Bohermeen AC's Tara Hunt, representing Eureka Kells, won the All-Ireland Schools junior girls 800 metres title on Saturday in Tullamore, reproducing the form of recent weeks when she won both the North Leinster and Leinster junior titles over the same distance.
In racing terms, she ran from gun to tape and was never headed as she won by a few metres on the line and posted a new personal best of 3:13.63, and although still a juvenile, she now moves into second place on the all time Bohermeen AC ranking behind the club record holder for the 800m distance, Rose Finnegan.
Hunt had the unique distinction of being presented with her gold medal by her grandad Michael Hunt, a former President of the Irish Schools Athletics Association.
Also in action at the All-Ireland schools representing Bohermeen AC was Sheila Croal from Athboy Community School and she made two trips over the weekend to Tullamore.
On Friday evening she took part in the junior girls hammer and was just outside the medals in fourth place but produced her best throw ever and breaking the 40th metre barrier for the first time when she threw 41.69m and on Saturday she placed sixth in the junior girls Shot Putt.
NICHOLA SHERIDAN
Once again, Nichola Sheridan produced another ground breaking performance in the Southern Hemisphere, this time she travelled to Launceston in Northern Tasmania, where she was in action over the half marathon distance and reputedly to be the fastest course in Australia and districts.
It was quite an international event with athletes from many countries on the starting line, and Sheridan placed eighth lady overall and posted a new personal best of 72:47, a four minute improvement over the distance in recent months.
The 40th Patrick Bell & Nicky Phillips 5k race and community walk takes place on Saturday 6th June at 7pm.
The milestone of the 40th event is sure to draw a large turnout, and in 1986 the first winners of the event over 10k distance were Rose Lambe of Knockbridge and Declan Byrne of South O'Hanlon AC.
