Kyte strike action deferred

Section of N3 currently closed to traffic.

Workers mounting a picket outside a Cavan Town factory have deferred their strike action after learning that a fellow employee has been injured in a car crash.

Following a serious road collision at Billis Bridge earlier today, Friday, August 19, a section of the N3 has been closed to traffic.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and diversions are in place for northbound traffic at Virginia, via Ballyjamesduff and New Inns, and for southbound traffic at the Lavey Inn, via Bailieborough and Virginia.

The diversion is expected to be in place for a number of hours as Emergency Services remain at the scene.

SIPTU members employed by Kyte Powertech in Cavan Town begun their industrial action this morning.

Today’s action is being taken in relation to a pay dispute between workers and management, with a 24 -hour work stoppage planned. However, that action has now been “deferred” according to a senior union official.

More than 450 people are employed at the Cavan Town plant, with approximately 360 SIPTU members, 88 per cent voted by ballot in favour of rejecting earlier Labour Court pay deal recommendations. Central to their dispute is the rate of pay versus the rising cost of living.
