Offaly man named as victim of fatal assault

An Edenderry man has been named as the victim of a fatal assault in Athlone in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Following a public order incident, Paul 'Babs' Connolly, a single man, aged 47, was discovered with serious injuries at Church Street, Athlone, at approximately 2.35am.

He was taken to Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, where he was later pronounced dead.

He worked with Ray’s Roofing and Home Renovation in Co. Meath, and lived in the Assumption Road area of Edenderry.

Gardai say the continue to investigate all the circumstances of a public order incident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, at Church Street, Athlone which resulted in the death of Connolly.

A post mortem has been completed, the results of which are not being released for operational reasons.

Two men who were arrested yesterday remain in Garda custody and investigations are ongoing.
