Local authority to liaise with neighbours on interconnector traffic plans

Cavan County Council is to liaise with neighbouring counties on correspondence received from Eirgrid with regard to the North-South Interconnector.

Director of Services, Planning, Community and Economic Development, Brendan Jennings, told the monthly meeting of the local authority that correspondence had been received from the company around proposed traffic management plans.

The contentious interconnector project is discussed at each meeting of the council as it’s listed as a standing item by Cathaoirleach Clifford Kelly.

Mr Jennings said the council’s planning department had received no correspondence from Eirgrid with relation to the project.

“We are aware there has been communication with our colleagues in the Municipal District regarding traffic management plans. I understand the same process is going on with Monaghan and possibly Meath.”

He said initial contact had been made with area managers regarding the proposed plans to deal with traffic management during the construction phase of the project.

Mr Jennings said the council is liaising with its counterparts in Monaghan and Meath to ascertain how they are dealing with the correspondence.

Cllr Kelly asked that planning permission for the project would be “double checked” by the council.

“Does that mean that what they have planning for will be double checked to make sure that any entrances where they do not have permission for will have to be sought in those areas?” he queried.

Mr Jennings said he would expect, subject to the processes in neighbouring counties, that all correspondence from Eirgrid would be directed to the planning office in future to ensure “a consistent approach to the project”.
