Newman calls time on Royal reign

After a few season plagued with hip injuries Mickey Newman has called time on his Meath career.

The 31-year-old Kilmainham man was nominated for an All-star after a brilliant debut season in 2014 that saw him score 1-27 for the Royals.

Newman missed the entire 2018 season, but returned in 2019, scoring 5-55 in league and championship as Meath reached the Super 8s for the first time.

Newman missed all of the 2020 season with a recurrence of a hip injury, but despite two operations the Kilmainham man bounced back in 2021, but struggled to nail down a starting place.

Newman's last appearance for Meath was as a substitute in the Leinster SFC quarter-final victory over Longford in Navan.

Newman announced his retirement on Twitter.

"Time to step aside! Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported me over the years. Great memories and friendships made along the way! #anmhíabú"
