Met Éireann issues new snow warning

Snow is set to sweep across the country in the coming days, with Met Éireann issuing a new 24-hour Status Yellow snow and ice warning from 8am on Thursday morning until 8am on Friday.

The alert is in place for all of Leinster, Munster and Connaught, with the forecaster predicting accumulations of up to five centimetres of snow in some areas (higher in mountainous areas) but transitioning to rain in the west and south later on Thursday night.

The latest weather warning comes on top of an earlier Status Yellow snow/ice warning issued by Met Éireann for eight counties, including Westmeath, with up to five centimetres of snow expected in some places throughout today and up to 6pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, weather experts are predicting bitterly cold conditions over the next few days, with lows of -5 possible in places overnight.

The outlook is for cold and unsettled weather with more widespread falls of sleet and snow. It will become windy over the weekend with spells of rain, possibly falling as snow in the eastern half of the country.
