VIDEO: Cyclists take over the street of Navan

The Navan Family Cycle took place last Sunday with young and old taking to the streets around Navan. The event was part of Bike Week and organised by

Navan Cycling Initiative - a community-based group that aims to make cycling in Navan and surrounding areas safe, enjoyable, and popular.

100 people took to the street for the event which took place over a 4km route.

"We could have had a bigger crowd, but we were limited because of Covid-19 restrictions," says Kevin Corrigan.

"It shows the the people of Navan and the surrounding areas are passionate about cycling and see cycling as a normal, fun and every day activity in the town.

"At the moment, cycling in Navan can be unsafe, unpleasant, and downright nerve-racking! We will have achieved our objectives when we see people cycling safely to school or workplace, to shops or cafés, to leisure activities, or to meet friends as part of normal, everyday life."

Navan Cycling Initiative are looking for improved access to the following:

Primary & Secondary Schools

Retail (Navan town centre, shopping centres, retail parks, supermarket and all other businesses in the town environs)

Enterprise (IDA & Digital Hub)

Leisure Amenities (swimming pool, parks, cinema, gyms)

Nature (Ramparts, Athlumney River Walk, Boyne Valley to Lakeland County Greenway, Boyne Greenway)

Safe commuting routes- Healthy lifestyles

Quality time with friends and family

What Meath County Council can do:

Segregated lanes on all major approach roads (Dublin Road, Kells Road, Trim Road, Kingscourt Road, Kentstown Road)

Improve connectivity by joining up existing infrastructure

Reduced speed limits on other roads where infrastructure is not feasible- Key junctions improved to take cycling into consideration

Temporary bollards or wands to make immediate provision for cyclists- Cycling infrastructure including bike parking is built into all town development plans

What we can do:

Get on our bikes!

Engage with Meath County Council on how to advance cycling infrastructure

Gain local support and inform people of progress (Twitter, Facebook)- Organise meeting (Covid-19 will restrict this for now)

Kidical mass- School Cycle Buses

Car free day- European Mobility week

Keep the conversation and discussion around this issue going.
