Meath Rose stuns viewers with 100kg deadlift in ballgown

Meath Rose Meghan Byrne wowed Rose of Tralee viewers last night when she deadlifted an incredible 100kg barbell on the stage at the Dome.

The primary school teacher (26) from Kells who is a strength training enthusiast, stunned the audience as she lifted the 100kg weight while wearing a glamorous red ballgown. Meghan slipped off her heels before she made the lift - to huge applause from the audience.

Before her novel entertainment piece, Meghan explained that she’s a teacher in Athboy and had wanted to be a teacher since she was aged eight.
Meghan lifted the weight without breaking a sweat and told Daithi she ‘felt good’ after it.

She went on to explain that her boyfriend Eamon Brady co-owns Complete Body Fitness gym in Navan.

She said: “He got me into weightlifting. I started a few years ago.”

Viewers at home were impressed by Meghan’s unique party piece with fans taking to social media to share their support.

The Rathmore NS teacher also performed a challenging deadlift on the Meath Rose selection night in the Newgrange. Speaking earlier this year she said she believed the festival is a chance to celebrate a mix of the old and the new and does not think that it is outdated.

“I’ve watched it since I was a little girl and I think it’s a lovely part of Irish culture. I feel that’s it’s keeping a little bit of old Ireland alive and I think bringing the weight lifting to it modernises it a little for women highlighting women’s strength. Women are physically and mentally strong. I think The Rose of Tralee is really empowering for women.”

The second installment of the show will air tonight (Tuesday 27 August) at 8pm on RTÉ One, and again after the news at 9.35pm.
