Kilmessan v Navan Cosmos

VIDEO: Cosmos hit for six in Kilmessan Shield cracker

North East Football League Kilmessan Shield
MDL grounds
Kilmessan 6 - 3 Navan Cosmos

On a bright sunny morning these two clubs steeped in history within the Meath area met at the MDL grounds for a Kilmessan shield tie that saw nine goals scored with six coming in the first thirty five minutes of this match.

It took seventeen minutes to break the deadlock, Robbie Maguire sending his brother Dermot through on goal with a defence cutting pass and the striker controlled the pass before looking up and slotting home past Michael Reilly who was deputising in goal.

Three minutes later the sides were level again as Shkelzen Dazipaj found himself unmarked on the right wing when receiving the ball and the winger showed all the composure of a professional when racing through and finishing under the body of goalkeeper Declan McGovern.

It took just two minutes for Kilmessan to find the net again, and take the lead once more as Dermot Maguire turned provider for his brother this time, chasing down the ball before turning inside and sending a delicious ball to the back post where Robbie was waiting to volley home a left footed shot into the far corner.

Navan Cosmos played lovely attacking football and their persistence paid off in the twenty eight minute when Conor Power took on his defender before curling a right footed effort into the bottom right corner of the net, leaving goalkeeper Declan McGovern with no chance from just outside the eighteen yard box.

Ten minutes before half time we had another goal, and it was Cosmos who found the back of the net with Alan Burke tapping home from close range following a crisp Kamil Rudzik cross which saw the sides go into the interval level at three apiece.

We didn't have to wait long in the second half for our next goal as Paddy Farrell ran onto a Robbie Maguire back heel which split the Cosmos defence and the midfielder had only Michale Reilly to beat and he made no mistake firing into the back of the net to give Kilmessan the lead once more.

Kilmessan regained their two goal cushion midway through the second half with enegetic midfielder Scott McGowan forcing Daniel Fon to play a pass back towards goal and cosmos defender Thomas Adamzyck failed to deal with it and his clearance deflected off McGowan into the path of Robbie Maguire who was alone in the box and he finished well to claim his hat trick.

Navan Cosmos pushed up looking to get themselves back in the game late on and this left them short at the back and Colin O'Hara was on hand to claim a Kilmessan sixth goal as he stuck his leg in against a Cosmos player to win the ball in midfield, it fell to Robbie Maguire who played a lovely pass back into the path of O'Hara and he calmly slotted home to put his side in the next round of the competition.
