Big interest in Navan Road Race

Sheridan Insurances have continued their support for the popular Navan Athletic Club annual 6k road race and fun run which will start close to Claremont Stadium this Friday (13th may) evening at 8pm for the Simon Cumbers Memorial Cup (men) and Paddy Hyland Memorial Cup (women).

This year’s event is set to be bigger and better than ever and the event is organised by the club in memory the late Simon Cumbers and the late Paddy Hyland.

The late Mr Cumbers was a former Navan AC club member who was tragically killed in Saudi Arabia in 2004 while working as a reporter for the BBC.

The late Mr Hyland was a prominent member of Navan AC for many years and was well known in Irish athletics as a race starter.

“We would like to express our gratitude to Sheridan Insurances for their invaluable and continuing support for this event over the last five years,” commented Navan AC official Mary Watters.

“Navan AC would also like to thank all the local businesses who have kindly sponsored the event this year.

“This is a race of a unique distance with a unique atmosphere and the club looks forward to warmly welcoming all participants next Friday night,” added the Navan AC official who will also be competing in the event where she finished seventh overall in the Paddy Hyland Memorial Cup and won her category in 2015.

This year there will also be a special pre-race warm up on the track and football pitch at Claremont Stadium at 7.30pm before the competitors make their way to the traditional starting line which is on the Commons Road close to Claremont Stadium.

Online registration is available at www.navanac.ie for €15 per person or you can bring a buddy and avail of the €25 deal for two.

Alternatively, entries will be accepted on the night up to 7.30pm only for €20 per person.

Registration will take place at Claremont Stadium and there will be chip timing while the first 400 entrants will receive a free technical long sleeve t-shirt and a goodie bag.

The first man across the line will be presented with the Simon Cumbers Memorial Perpetual Trophy and the first woman home will receive the Paddy Hyland Perpetual Memorial Trophy.

Cash prizes will also be on offer across a range of categories including the top three men and women overall, the top three junior men and women and the top three men and women in the following categories - over-40, over-45, over-50, over-55 and over-60.

Team prizes will also be awarded to the first three mens and ladies teams with the best four to count on each team. Last year’s race was won by Freddy Keron Stuk (Raheny Shamrocks) while Caitriona O’Brien from Bohermeen took the honours in the women’s section.

The Meath Chronicle will cover the start and finish of the race via a live Facebook video and there will be a report on www.meathchronicle.ie later on friday night.
