Record-breaking Ratoath athlete

Ratoath athlete Aimee Doherty had a great win at the Scottish National Indoor Championships at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on Saturday where she set a new record for the 1,500m.

The St Paul’s NS, Ratoath sixth class pupil competed in the u-13 girls 1,500m and took gold in a very tight finish from Edinburgh athlete Katie Johnson with just 100th of a second separating the girls.

The first two finishers were over 20 seconds ahead of the third-placed athlete, Niamh Riggins.

The Meath girl broke the existing championship record with a time of 4:58.59, a time that shattered the old championship record by over 12 seconds.

The Scottish all-time indoor and outdoor record of 5:03.05 was also broken and that record had stood for some 38 years after Carol Candlish recorded that time on St Patrick’s Day 1978.

Result: 1, Aimee Doherty (Ratoath AC) 4:58.59; 2, Katie Johnson (Edinburgh AC) 4:58.60; 3, Niamh Riggins (Ron Hill) 5:21.22
