Treacy wins Armagh International

Meath athlete Sara Treacy got back to winning form with a sprint finish to win the 26th Armagh International Road Race (3,000m) on Thursday night in a time 9:18.20.

Treacy was an award winner at the Meath Sports Awards last month and on Thursday night she edged out Sarah Inglis from Scotland who finished second in 9:19.01 with Laura Whittle (Scotland) taking third place in 9:19.27.

The Dunboyne AC runner had a couple of disappointing races after returning from altitude training in Albuquerque two weeks ago, but returned to form to hold off Inglis and Whittle.

Other leading Irish finishers included Letterkenny's Ann Marie McGlynn (sixth) in 9:23.54, Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle) eighth in 9:24.59, who also competed over 1,500m at the Athlone international on Wednesday night, Deirdre Byrne (Sli Cualann) 16th in 9:38.68 and Mary Ann O’Sullivan (St Abban’s) 25th in 9:55.55.

Treacy is undecided about competing at the GloHealth National Indoor Championships in Athlone next week.

The Meath woman has tentatively planned an altitude training camp in Font Romeu in April as she builds up her preparation for the 3,000m steeplechase at the Olympics in Rio.

THOMAS MORAN

Dunshaughlin athlete Thomas Moran competed in the men’s race (5,000m) and was one of a number of athletes to break the 15-minute barrier in 14:43.15.

The men's race was won by Charlie Hulson (Sale Harriers) in 14:02.83 ahead of Belgian Yannick Michiels (14:02.99) and Andy Maud (Highgate Harriers) who was third in 14:03.17.

Kevin Mulcaire (Ennis) was the first Irish finisher in 15th in 14:14.02.
