Matheus Soares performing on 'The Voice of Ireland'.

Navan's Matheus makes it through The Voice

Eighteen year-old Matheus Soares was first up to sing on Sunday night's blind auditions on The Voice of Ireland. Matheus lives in Navan and came to Ireland nine years ago with his family from Brazil. He loves soul music and sang One Night Only by Jennifer Hudson. He used to weigh a whopping 25 stone and slimmed down in just 12 months. His performance tickles Rachel’s fancy and she hits the button.

Kian: it was a very strong performance I was expecting to see a much older guy, lay off the vibrato a little bit’

Una: that’s one of the strongest male vocals that I have heard, so glad Rachel turned for you.

Bressie: I agree with Una, great vocalist but too heavy on vibrato’

Rachel: ‘what they are saying about the vibrato – do not change that. I love that about your voice and welcome to Team Rachel.

34 year old Marty Bonner from Derry works in construction and sings in a band at the weekend. The audience certainly loves his performance of ACDC’s Shook Me All Night Long, and so does Bressie and Kian. His gravelly voice gives up on him just towards the end of the song, cause for concern for our coaches.

Una: I am not really into that kind of music but I total appreciate you were doing it really well.

Rachel: I wouldn’t know what to do with you but you definitely got everyone going’

Bressie: Your voice went at the end, and if you sng like that all the time it will go. It was really good, I enjoyed it.

Kian: we have some really strong rock singers, so it’s gonna be a good test for you. We are going to have to get you singing from the right place.

Marty had an idea in his mind right from the start who to go with and he joins Team Bressie.

Joy Isabel was a child star in her native Phillipines, and will be singing Listen to your Hear by Roxette. Her husband and parents are with her for the audition, and her dad who is her biggest fan encouraged her to audition. None of our coaches hit the red buttons.

Una: Sorry nobody turned I can hear so much potential you need more experience

Bressie: One line was really good and the next line you would lose it

Sofia Lozano (29) has made Dublin her home after falling in love with the city and its music scene. Originally from Mexico she was the victim of a kidnapping, a taxi driver took her off and she had to escape from the car. She feels safe in Dublin! Singing Shakira’s Objection it’s not enough to impress the coaches.

Kian: it was interesting, the song got away from you.’

Una: it sounded so much like Shakira I thought I was listening to a tribute act.

Oonagh O’Gorman (32) from Belfast would like to be doing music 24/7. Oonagh is a real rock chic with her look and she picks Foo Fighters Best of You to perform for the coaches. Despite a good performance she doesn’t get through to the battles.

Bressie: it’s a massive track, it was politely sang. I was missing that intent.

Rachel: ‘something didn’t connect with me’

Kian: ‘I am a Foo Fighters fanatic I was looking for that passion and aggression. That’s why it didn’t grab me I am very sorry’

Ciaran O’Driscoll (27) originally trained as a classical singer, he did the Voice UK last year hoping for a chair turn. He reckons he caught the coaches off guard and they didn’t know what they had in front of them. The Derry native’s range is amazing, one minute he sounds like a girl, then next minute his vocal drops so low to be a man’s voice. He picks Radiohead’s Creep which blows our four coaches out of the water! They all want him, who will he choose?

Rachel: ‘your range is unreal, where did that come from? There is nobody like you I loved that so much’

Kian: You can’t be shocked, that was incredible, I would say that is our best performance on the show so far this year. It was incredible, at the minute you are the one to beat’

Una: You have 90 seconds to sell yourself but the moment you opened your mouth you had me

Bressie: It was deeply original, I would adore you to be on my team.

Ciaran’s reasoning for picking his coach is simple, when working in a bar in London he served Rachel a glass of tap water! Well everyone has to have a reason!

Moylan Brunnock (20) has worked on her confidence and now feels she should grab any opportunity she can…it’s all up to the coaches. Moylan hails from Dungarvan in Waterford and she is singing one of her favourite songs - Joni Mitchell’s Woodstock. Her unique voice results in a 4 coach turn…so now it’s all up to her!

Una: I left it til the last second cause I was so enjoying it, your voice is so beautiful’

Bressie: that type of voce is so unusual, the potential there is frightening’

Rachel: I absolutely loved that, you’re the type of singer I love, you tell a story effortlessly.

Kian: You are very unique and quirky,

Having her mind made up before she came on she joins Team Bressie

Young mum Sarah Daly (28) from Walkinstown Dublin is hoping the Voice could be the start of something big for her. She is hoping Una will turn for her, as a mum of two she thinks Una will understand trying to bring kids up and also doing your music. Singing You Got the Love by Florence and the Machine she gets her wish as Una hits her button.

Rachel: it felt like you were rushing it too much but it was a good vocal

Kian: it was a good, strong solid performance and you deserved to go through

Bressie: very little dynamic in the song, I think you are going to have to learn how to go huge

Una: I am looking for strong females and you so deserve a place

Dan Roche (19) is this week’s 2FM Wild Card, and Jenny Greene reckons he could go all the way. Hailing from Waterford he says the hardest thing he ever had to do was come out as gay, he didn’t have a social life because he was ashamed of who he was, now he can be himself. Singing Let Me Love You by Ne-Yo he misses a couple of bars of the song. He quickly recovers but its not enough for our coaches and none of the tune.

Una: Did you forget the words? but you picked it right back up. Your voice shines on the chorus

Bressie: You picked a very hard song to sing, there are definitely parts if you trained that vocal you could be really really good.

Rachel: you definitely have got a good voice, take on this advice and come back.

Loic Bontemps is originally from France and has been in Dublin just 6 weeks before his audition, he has taken some time out of his studies in UCD to attend the Helix today. He doesn’t really know the coaches at all! Singing Rocket Man by Elton John. It doesn’t take long before Rachel hits her button.

Bressie: It was pretty good, I was getting into it. It just didn’t quite get there’

Kian: You did a great job, I had my hand on the button you fell off the last minute

Una: I enjoyed that

Rachel: I love singers like you who come out and sing! I am so happy you are on my team’

Tara Browne (25) from Laois has applied for the Voice and X Factor before but was unsuccessful, she has been practising and singing as much as possible since then and has done some YouTube videos. She feels she has a good chance as long as her nerves don’t get the better of her. Singing Glitterball by Sigma featuring Ella Henderson.

Rachel: When you went into your falsetto it was controlled and beautiful you have a lovely quality t your voice’

Kian: a lot of fantastic tones to your voice it was really strong, you are too good to walk onto somebody else’s team, I hope you choose me’

Una I loved that I would love you on my team

Tara had an idea before she came on the show which coach to choose and she joins Team Una

Kelsy Hoare (20) Cork used to suffer from panic attacks but it hasn’t stopped her performing, she feels she has what it takes to be the first female singer of the voice. Singing Hozier’s From Eden

Una: I am glad Kian turned for you

Bressie: it was loud form the start and it didn’t get quiet,

Rachel: you have got a great voice.

Kian: Disagree with what everyone said, we can prove them wrong as the competition goes on!
