Meath win semi at dunganny

Meath defeated Laois convincingly in the semi-final of the Damien Reid Cup (under-17) at Dunganny on Tuesday night and will now tackle Monaghan in the decider at Darver on Saturday at 1pm.

Last night in Dunganny, Meath won by 5-19 to 0-10 after leading by 2-8 to 0-7 at the interval.

Nine counties participated in the tournament with Meath topping their group following wins over Wicklow and Offaly.

Monaghan topped their group with a 1-18 to 0-8 win over Louth but it was somewhat unusual in the sense that they played only once as there was some disagreement over the date of the fixture with Fermanagh.

Louth defeated Fermanagh by 2-12 to 2-4, but that left the Wee County with an inferior scoring difference to Monaghan and they finished second in the group, despite the fact that they played two games.

Kildare topped the third group and Laois were second (best runner-up) so they also qualified for the semi-finals.

Monaghan defeated Kildare in the other semi-final while the other second-placed teams will contest the Shield final.
