Top Twitter Topics – December 16th

Were you too busy with Christmas preparations to know what happened across the Twitter-sphere this weekend? Well fear not, we have all the top twitter trends for you to mull over on this Monday morning.

1. Murray

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards took place last night in Leeds, which saw Wimbledon champion Andy Murray scoop the top prize on the night as Sports Personality of the Year for 2013. Murray was unable to accept the award in person as he had pre season training but he appeared via video link to accept the award and thank everyone for their support over the year. Andy was the favorite to win the award after becoming the first Brit in 77 years to win the Wimbledon men’s single title this summer.  He received a whopping 56% of the public vote, streets ahead of Leigh Halfpenny, Lions player of the season, who came in second place.

2. #WWETLC

Sunday night also saw a wrestling match that had been in the making for years. World Heavyweight Champion John Cena and WWE Champion Randy Orton met in a dangerous table, ladders and chairs match to determine the champion of champions. It was Randy Orton who came out on top after a tough match Orton is now Champion of Champions and new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

3. Sam Bailey, Katy Perry, Louis Walsh

The X-Factor live final took place over the weekend. It saw Sam Bailey, Nicholas McDonald and Luke Friend battle it out to become the X-Factor winner 2013. Luke Friend crashed out in third place on Saturday night so it was between the bookies favorite Sam and Scottish lad, Nicholas. On Sunday night they both performed their potential winners single, Sam took on Demi Lovato’s ballad, “Skyscraper” while Nicholas covered Five for Fighting’s song “Superman”. After a variety of performances from One Direction and Katy Perry (who was trending for all the wrong reasons after her weird outfit choice and poor vocals on her new single “Unconditionally”) it was time for Sam Bailey to be crowned this year’s X-Factor winner. It also worth mentioning that Louis Walsh sported some very questionable patterned “Scottish” trousers for the final in support of his act Nicholas. Don’t believe us? Check out the picture below… We’re just glad he didn’t wear a kilt!

4. Enda Kenny, #stateofit

Enda Kenny’s state of the nation address took place last night on RTE1 after the 9 O’ Clock news which saw him officially announce Ireland’s exit from the Troika, Ireland’s bailout programme.  It was all very underwhelming with their being no huge difference between yesterday and today except maybe where the markets are concerned. The Government tried to get #IRLexit trending across Twitter before the broadcast was made however Twitter users had a different hashtag in mind. #stateofit began trending an hour before the broadcast was made with many users calling for the people of Ireland to boycott his national address. What did you make of the Taoiseach’s address?

5. #roomtoimprove

Episode five of Room to Improve aired on Sunday night with a family in Firhouse, Dublin looking to improve their home. The house in question had an unusual layout with the man of the house wanting to turn the garage into a games room for his beloved snooker table. Architect Dermot Bannon did his best to make use of the space that the family had while trying to keep everyone happy. What did you make of the episode? We thought it made for some pretty funny viewing.
