End of season boxing at Navan

It was a case of seconds out for Navan Boxing Club as they hosted a very successful end-of-season tournament in Navan O'Mahonys clubhouse on Saturday evening. The main opposition to the host club's boxers was provided by a contingent from Cambridge Boxing Club in England. They sent five boxers to the tournament and two coaches. The remainder of Navan's opponents came from various other boxing clubs including South Meath, K&K in Cavan, Clann Naofa from Dundalk, Dealgan Dundalk and Thurles. The tournament involved 16 bouts with five exhibitions and 11 judged competitions. The exhibition bouts were Eross Stonckus v Conor Molloy (Cambridge), Jake Murray v Daniel McDonagh (Clan Naofa), Patrick O'Leary v Tiernan Byrne (South Meath), Catherine Blaney (Navan) v Ann Daly (South Meath) and Mark O'Leary v Max Durning (Cambridge). In the judged competitions Luke Green (Navan) received a majority decision against Danny O'Reilly (South Meath) in the Boy 1 36kgs category. In the Boy 1 39kg section Padraig Hughes from the K&K club in Kingscourt stopped Dylan Dwyer (Thurles) in the round two while in the Boy 2 31kg Shane McEntee (Navan) was defeated by David Hughes (K&K) and Daniel Dooner (Navan) was defeated by Brendan Spring (Cambridge). Chris Gaynor (Navan) proved too strong for Sean Spillane (Thurles) in the Boy 2 48kg while at Boy 2 50kg Colin Monerawela (Navan) out-scored Casey Durning (Cambridge). Shauna Blaney (Navan) had a narrow win in a very keen competition over Chris Mulligan (Clan Naofa) in the Girls Youth 2 64kg while Chris Blaney (Navan) out-pointed Cambridge BC's Wesley Clarke (Cambridge) at senior 75kg. A number of presentations were made on the night with the Benny Kane Cup presented by his daughter Kay Carroll to Leroy Dick who was nominated as 'the most improved boxer' in the club in the past year. Monerawela received a plaque as the best young boxer while Emma Croghan received a plaque as recognition for all her work over the years. Members of the Cambridge BC were presented with plaques as mementos of their visit to Navan.
