Illustrious history of Skryne GFC committed to paper for first time

Meath's earliest surviving All-Ireland winning senior football captain, Brian Smyth, this week enjoyed a nostalgic return to the scene of his 1949 Sam Maguire victory, accompanied by his fellow Skryne clubmen who all hold All-Ireland medals with the Royal County. The club boasts players on all seven of Meath's All Ireland-winning teams, of 1949, '54, '67, '87, '88, '96, and 1999. In fact, the county has never won an All-Ireland without a Skryne clubman on the team. The veteran players from the '40s and '50s were joined by recent stars such as John McDermott and Trevor Giles to announce details of a major club history which will be launched by GAA president Christy Cooney next week. The new publication has been painstakingly compiled by David Carty and edited by Ray Mooney. It is published in two hardback volumes of 800 pages each in a presentation case, in a limited edition printing of 750 copies. Skryne GFC has issued an open invitation to all interested to attend the launch by Christy Cooney at Killeen Castle Golf Club on Friday 30th March at 8.30pm. The history will be available to order from www.skrynegfc.ie or through Dermot Carty on (086) 876 0336 or Dan O'Leary, (087) 822 2012.
