Navan coach Leon Jordaan.

Good return from trip to Cork

After making a brilliant start Navan had to rely on a late Riaan van der Vyver penalty kick to salvage a draw against Sunday's Well in the AIL Div 2B clash at Musgrave Park on Saturday. Both sides will feel they could and should have won this game with Navan making a blistering start to lead at one stage 13-0. That was reduced to 13-10 at the interval and Sunday's Well edged ahead before van der Vyver rescued a draw and two valuable points for Leon Jordaan's side. The Navan scrum was dominant on their own ball in the opening half and they put pressure on the hosts. Two penalties from van der Vyver pushed Navan into an early lead while Sunday's Well had a player sin-binned. The visitors took advantage of the extra man to fashion a try with David Delahunt and Jack Mullins involved in creating a chance for John Davis who powered his way to the line. The try was converted by van der Vyver to give his side their comfortable lead. However, Sunday's Well hit back to leave only three points between the sides at the interval. In the second-half the game ebbed and flowed with both sides slotting over penalty kicks to tie up the scores at 16-16 apiece. Navan thought they had taken a decisive lead when Paul Feeney got over the line, but the 'try' was disallowed for a double movement. Navan's disappointment was further compounded as Sunday's Well went in front from a penalty kick as the game moved into the final stages. However, the tenacious Balreask Old side found an extra gear and finished the game much stronger and following good work by the pack Sunday's Well conceded a penalty with van der Vyver calmly stepping up to slot the ball between the posts. Scenting a victory Navan pushed forward with Conor Brady doing some notable work up front and they set up a drop goal attempt for Fergal Hennessy, but under immense pressure his shot drifted just wide. Among Navan's top performers were u-19s Killian McCourt and John Sheridan both of whom have prospered in the Rugby Academy at Balreask Old. Next up for Navan are relegation strugglers Wanderers who visit on Saturday 24th March on the club's annual Pink Day fundraiser for breast cancer awareness.
