The late Tony McLoughlin, whose body was recovered from the Boyne on Sunday.

Body of missing man is recovered from river

The body of missing Navan resident Tony McLoughlin was recovered from the Boyne River last Sunday, 29th January. The married father-of-two was last seen on Monday 16th January at 1.15pm, near Johnstown Shopping Centre in Navan. His daughter, Lisa, said last week that his disappearance was "totally out of character for someone so dependable and reliable". The body of Mr McLoughlin, who was 57, was discovered in the river near Stackallen, between Slane and Navan, by a canoeist at around 1pm on Sunday. The canoeist contacted the Drogheda-based Boyne Fishermen Rescue and Recovery Service. They, in turn, contacted Meath River Rescue, whose members were searching the river nearby in difficult conditions as the river was swollen by persistent rain over the weekend. Mr McLoughlin's body was located and removed from the river at Slane Castle jointly by both rescue groups, ending a major operation that had involved Meath Civil Defence, gardaí and other volunteers since his disappearance. The family of Mr McLoughlin extended their gratitude for all the volunteers involved in the search for Mr McLoughlin and the recovery of his body. Mr McLoughlin is survived by his wife, Sally; daughters, Lisa and Sophia; son-in-law, Colin; brothers, sisters, and other extended family. His body will repose at his home in Navan this afternoon (Wednesday 1st February) from 4pm until 7pm before reposing at the Larry Massey Funeral Home, Ballyfermot Road, Dublin 10, on Thursday. The funeral takes place on Friday in Ballyfermot.
