School temporary home to group for upcoming show

Trim Drama Group will perform its latest production in Scoil Mhuire secondary school in the town due to the recent closure of the town hall. A spokesperson for the group said that the group will perform Bernard Farrell's 'Many Happy Returns' in the school, located on Patrick Street, from 17th to 20th November due to the controversial closure of the local town hall which left local drama, musical and youth organisations without a home. "We're trying to get the message out and about that, with the town hall gone, we are running the play in the Scoil Mhuire," he said. Trim Town Councillor Ronan McKenna says the council is doing all it can to facilitate local groups and that the move is a temporary one. "It's not easy for them so we are trying to help out in every way we can. We're meeting regularly with the group and have agreed that they will come back with their proposals which we will listen to. "In the meantime, we are trying to help with smaller things like signage for productions and moving chairs but we are trying to make it as easy as possible for them," he said. The groups learned that the town hall was to be closed to the public after a fire report, described as "damning", revealed that the hall was in need of over €730,000 in repairs. The report was presented to councillors at the September meeting of the town council, which drew around 100 people, gathered outside the chamber highlighting their concerns. The two major groups - Trim Musical Society and Trim Drama Group - have now formed an action committee and intend to meet council officials and councillors at the first opportunity "to help deliver a theatre for Trim". Trim Drama Group will perform Many Happy Returns on 17th-20th November at 8pm each night and tickets are €12 (€10 concession) from James Allen Hair Design, Haggard Court, Trim, telephone (046) 943 7503, or available on the door.
