The late Mr Pat Walsh.

Obituaries 05-03-2011

A link with one of Navan's oldest businesses has been lost with the passing of Mr Pat Walsh, who ran Lorenzen's Pork Butchers on Watergate Street up until his retirement in 2001. Mr Walsh, of St Enda's Villas, Navan, died peacefully on 16th February last at Millbury Nursing Home, aged 91. His retirement from the well-known Navan shop saw the business close after 71 years in operation. It was founded by Christian Lorenzen, who had been interned in Oldcastle during World War II. Lorenzen arrived in the country from Schleswig in the country then known as Prussia, in September, 1930, and brought with him the recipe for the famous Lorenzen's sausages. The traditional-fronted shop became renowned for its sausages and black and white puddings. Mr Walsh recalled once living over the shop with his parents. He was only 10 years old when he managed to get an after-school part-time job in the pork business downstairs. This eventually became his career, and later he and his late brother, Joe, ran the business for many years. Another brother, Charlie, lived in England. Their father had been a watchmaker. Mr Walsh recalled that when Watergate Street native Monsignor Eamon Marron was Rector of the Irish College in Rome, he is said to have brought a few pounds of the spicy Navan sausages to the Pope. The traditional shopfront of Lorenzen's, along with others on that streetscape, was featured in the 1984 movie, 'Cal' starring Helen Mirren and Donal McCann, and the store was also used in a television advertisement. Mr Walsh played rugby with Navan Rugby Club in his youth, and was an early member of Royal Tara Golf Club. Deceased was also a learned amateur wildlife enthusiast. He was predeceased by his wife, Greta, in 1984, and by his son, Tony, in January 2010. Mr Walsh is survived by his sons, Joe and Pat; daughter-in-law, Nina; grandchildren, Maoise and Riain; and many friends. The funeral took place from St Mary's Church, Navan, to St Mary's Cemetery. ________________________________________________________ Anthony and Annie Mullen, Navan A Navan family suffered a double bereavement within two months with the passing of Ms Annie (Nancy) Mullen, Emmet Terrace, on 6th December last, and the death of her husband Anthony (Tony), on 29th January.
