The late Jimmy Dargan.

Recent deaths 31-07-10

The death occurred on Thursday last of Mr Jimmy Dargan, Ballivor, who was chairman of the Ballivor Horse Show for 40 years. Mr Dargan passed away unexpectedly at his home. The long-serving chairman was instrumental in making and maintaining Ballivor as one of the finest horse shows in Ireland. It was a bold and ambitious step to start up a show of such scale and with such a well endowed prize fund in a small village like Ballivor where most of the committee had little knowledge and even less interest in horses. Mr Dargan helped create a sense of pride and a feel-good factor that a local parish could hold such an event and the enthusiasm took off. That the great and the good competed there only stoked these emotions. During difficult times, he refused to comprise on the quality of the show and the status of the Grand Prix was sacrosanct. He was immensely proud that his son, Peter, joined him as chairman. Not only did he guide the show over those 40 years, but, for the last 12 years he hosted the show on his own land. Last year, a total of 63 acres was taken over to stage all the different activities. Mr Dargan was also a keen horse breeder and producer with many of his horses going on to become international showjumpers. Pride of place in Jimmy Dargan's heart was the great Coolronan. Ridden by Captain Con Power, he was a member of two winning Aga Khan teams, one of which was the great three-in-a-row team of Eddie Macken, Paul Darragh and James Kienan. Known by many as the 'Voice of Ballivor', equestrian journalist and broadcaster Michael Slevin says of Jimmy: "He really was the heart and soul of the show and always showed great courage, particularly in later years dealing with failing eye-sight, still out and about around the showgrounds. When Jimmy came into the judge's box, you knew the boss was there!" From a well-known local farming family, Mr Dargan was involved in other community activities in Ballivor. He was predeceased by his wife, Cepta; son, James and brother, Michael J; and is survived by his family, Peter, Andrée, Joseph, Michael; grandchildren Aisling, Ruth, Joshua, Evan, Christopher and Matthew; sisters Lily Tierney, Bridget Carty, Rita O'Siocrú, Dina Williams; brother Peter; son-in-law; daughters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces; nephews; relatives and friends.
