'Total mayhem' outside Navan primary school

Traffic chaos at St Paul's NS in Navan has led the principal, Patricia Fahy, to describe the situation at her school as total 'mayhem' and has stated that there are major safety issues for pupils, teachers and parents entering and exiting the grounds. In a letter sent to the Town Clerk, Shane Donnelly, and circulated to all of the local councillors, Ms Fahy has urged the council to intervene and deal with the traffic management and safety issues at the school, which is located at Abbeylands on the north side of town. Backing the call for safety measures to be introduced is Cllr Shane Cassells, who has now tabled a motion for Navan Town Council to examine a report drawn up by Road Safety Officer, Michael Finnegan and implement a series of measures. "Starting off there are a number of items that can be dealt with as a matter of urgency such as increased signage on the Windtown Road and the repainting of a yellow box outside the school," remarked Cllr Cassells. "The larger problem of congestion is something which occurs at every school at the drop off and collection times during the day. However, the school have submitted plans to the council as to how a new one way traffic system could be implemented with the construction of a slip way entrance off the N51. He continued: "Whatever the solution it is imperative that the matter is addressed because not only is it leading to chaos for those using the school but the congestion is having a wider impact on those living along the Windtown Road." The school management have also stated that the location of the pedestrian crossing is totally ineffective and called for it to be moved to the Windtown side of the entrance to the school.
