Carlanstown man dies after climbing Croagh Patrick

Widespread sadness was felt in the Carlanstown community upon learning of the sudden death of Mr Joseph Reilly, Robertstown, who passed away after climbing Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo on Saturday. A popular man who was involved in the local community and was well-known in the area, Mr Reilly had worked for several years delivering oil for Sean McEntee in Nobber. Mr Reilly (49) became unwell as he reached the summit of Croagh Patrick at around midday on Saturday and was taken for shelter into the chapel at the top of the mountain. He was airlifted by Coastguard helicopter to Mayo General Hospital but passed away shortly afterwards. A post-mortem examination confirmed Mr Reilly died of natural causes. Deceased is survived by his wife, Collette; daughters, Michelle and Claire; parents, Eamonn and Sue; brothers, Shay, Eamon and Gerard; sisters, Mary and Anne; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and relatives. Mr Reilly's remains were removed to the Church of the Nativity, Kilbeg, on Monday evening and the funeral Mass took place at 12 noon yesterday (Tuesday) followed by burial in Kilbeg Cemetery.
